Job Search, Human Capital and Wage Inequality

چکیده
Job Search, Human Capital and Wage Inequality The objective of this paper is to construct and quantitatively assess an equilibrium search model with on-the-job search and general human capital accumulation. In the model workers enter the labour market with different abilities and firms differ in their productivities. Wages are dispersed because of search frictions and workers’ productivity differentials. The model generates a simple (log) wage variance decomposition that is used to measure the importance of firm and worker productivity differentials, frictional wage dispersion and workers’ sorting dynamics. I calibrate the model using a sample of young workers for the UK. I show that wage inequality among low skilled workers is mostly due to differences in their productivities. Among medium skilled workers frictional wage dispersion and sorting dynamics are, together, as important as workers’ productivity differentials. Differences in firms’ productivities are also an important source of wage inequality for both skill groups and account for a large share of frictional wage dispersion. Quantitatively the model is able to reproduce the observed cross-sectional wage distribution, the average wage-experience profile and the amount of frictional wage dispersion observed in the data as measured by the Mean-min ratio. Accounting for the Evolution of U.S. Wage InequalityThe usual disclaimer applies
A large literature has documented an increase of U.S. wage inequality over the past several decades. This paper asks how far one can go towards accounting for the evolution of several measures of U.S. wage inequality based on a stochastic human capital model. The model features four school levels with distinct labor types and skill prices and Ben-Porath style human capital accumulation on the j...

Argentina experienced an important increase in wage dispersion in the last 20 years. This increase occurred not only across different education groups, but also within these groups. In spite of exceptional economic growth rates, after the 2001/2002 macroeconomic crisis, residual inequality remained high. This paper applies a search model with exogenous human capital accumulation to Argentinean ...
متن کاملHuman Capital Accumulation and Labour Market Equilibrium
Human Capital Accumulation and Labour Market Equilibrium We analyse an equilibrium labour market with on-the-job search and experience effects (where workers learn-by-doing). The analysis yields a standard Mincer wage equation with worker fixed effects and endogenously determined firm fixed effects. It shows that learningby-doing increases equilibrium wage dispersion consistent with the data. E...
متن کاملMatching, Heterogeneity, and the Evolution of Income Distribution
This paper analyzes a model in which firms and workers have to engage in costly search to find a production partner, and endogenizes the skill, job, and wage distributions in this context. The presence of search frictions implies that there are two redistributive forces in the labor market. The first is mismatch relative to the Walrasian economy; skilled workers tend to work with lower physical...
